The Plant Store will re-open for sales the week of May 13th, 2024 for local pickup

  • Please see the Using the Plant Library  page  for some tips on how to make the most of the information here to select species for creating a healthy native plant community suited to the conditions of your site.
  • I'm currently working on shifting the store part of this site over to more complex software that will allow for filtering by multiple plant traits and making wish lists of species you would like to order, so please bear with me when it comes to announcing the exact species offerings for 2024 (there will be lots, including some species not previously offered).

Lythrum alatum, Winged Loosestrife

Lythrum alatum

Winged Loosestrife

~This is a native to Ontario species, not the invasive Purple Loosestrife Lythrum salicaria~

  • Average to high moisture soils
  • Full sun
  • 36” tall, 18” to 30” wide
  • Mid summer to fall
  • Native to Ontario, thrives in high moisture areas

New to me this year, grown from seeds from Prairie Moon Nursery

https://www.prairiemoon.com/lythrum-alatum-winged-loosestrife-prairie-moon-nursery.html

A bushy, long blooming species whose natural habitat is under pressure from the invasive Purple Loosestrife.

Online descriptions suggest that this species is not a particularly fast spreader, but that may only apply to mixed plant communities and they may be a bit more enthusiastic if planted in an enriched garden bed without a lot of neighbours.

Recommended in Lorraine Johnson’s blog post Ghost Plants about hard to source species deserving of wider planting in Ontario gardens

Please check out the Prairie Moon listing at the link above for more details.

Species that are native to this continent, but not historically native to Ontario are marked with a ~
While it rarely comes up, I do reserve the right to limit plant quantities, mostly to help ensure that as many native plant gardens as possible become a reality
